DTA celebrates Aged Care Employee Day

Dementia Training Australia is adding its voice to the growing chorus of people and organisations saying #ThanksforCaring to the 360,000 aged care staff working across Australia to care for older people in community or residential care services.

The name of this focus area is changing from "Responsive Behaviours" to "Changed Behaviour". You may see both terms while we transition our content to Changed Behaviour.

The tribute comes as part of Aged Care Employee Day – Saturday 7 August – which is a new national event, launched in 2018 by Whiddon, and now led by Leading Age Services Australia (LASA) as a way of acknowledging the enormous contribution made by the aged care workforce.

Aged Care Employee Day celebrates the entire workforce involved in caring for older people who receive care services – nurses and personal care assistants, allied health professionals, cooks and hospitality teams, drivers, cleaners, laundry staff, leisure and lifestyle offers, administration teams, maintenance workers, volunteers alongside many others.

2020 and 2021 have been difficult years for everyone, and those working in aged care in particular have had to show great strength and resilience throughout this time.

As a national organisation funded by the Federal Government to provide dementia education and training across Australia, DTA works closely with aged care providers across Australia. We see the commitment and courage of the aged care workforce in action every day.

Some examples of this include when aged care staff work with us to:

  • develop an innovative action plan for improving a residential aged care environment
  • deliver programs to manage medications better within residential aged care facilities
  • be champions within their organisation in relation to improving understanding of responsive behaviours among people with dementia

More and more people working in aged care are taking the chance to complete individual online modules or courses with DTA, and in so doing are equipping themselves with the knowledge needed to offer even better care.
