New online learning for the dementia workforce

Dementia Training Australia (DTA) continues to develop its range of online courses with six new courses aimed at the dementia care workforce.

The name of this focus area is changing from "Responsive Behaviours" to "Changed Behaviour". You may see both terms while we transition our content to Changed Behaviour.

Dementia Training Australia (DTA) continues to develop its range of online courses with six new courses aimed at the dementia care workforce.

This brings the total number of online courses available to 17, with all courses cost-free and mobile-friendly.

Sarah Bartlett, National Learning and Development Manager for DTA, says the new courses are already proving popular – with particular interest in the ‘Dementia Discovery’ series and the ‘Creating supportive environments for people living with dementia’ course, which went live in September 2020.

Need to take your time? You can complete modules as separate units, without needing to do the full course in one session.

After completing a course, learners can download a certificate of completion, which can be used as evidence of continuing professional development for the professional organisation they are registered with.

A quick introduction to DTA’s latest courses:

Dementia Discovery mountains with track

Dementia Discovery (3 hours)
This series – aimed at people new to working in dementia care – introduces the main types of dementia and explores why empathy and communication matter, across 7 short modules.

Understanding responsive behaviours (4 hours)
This course explores how people with dementia may express their needs through behaviour, rather than words.

Reducing medicines in people living with dementia ( 1 hour)
This two-module course, targeted at nursing staff working in residential aged care, aims to help staff understand their role in optimising the use of medicines for people living with dementia.

Recognising and acting on pain in people living with dementia for direct care workers (3 hours)
It can be difficult to identify pain in people living with dementia who are not able to describe their pain: this course tackles recognition, assessment and management of pain in people with dementia.

Sleep matters (75 mins)
Three short modules, on understanding, assessing and optimising sleep, aimed at health and care staff working in residential aged care.

Creating supportive environments for people living with dementia (3 hours)
A 3-module course on why environments matter and how you can help support transformation of the places you work to better support people living with dementia.

DTA is committed to continuing to grow the number of online courses on a variety of dementia-related topics to meet the needs of the multidisciplinary workforce.
