Updating the NSQHS Standards

An updated version of the NSQHS will contain specific actions for recognition and response to people with cognitive impairment receiving care.

The Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care (ACSQHC) is due to release an updated version of the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards in late 2017 containing specific actions for recognition and response to people with cognitive impairment receiving care.

The NSQHS Standards are designed to protect the public from harm and to improve the quality of health service provision. All hospitals, day procedure services and the majority of public dental services in Australia need to be accredited to the NSQHS Standards (ACSQHC 2016).

According to the ACSQHC, resources to implement V2 are expected to be available in late 2017. Assessment to the new Standards is planned to start from 1 January 2019.

Health service organisations will be told about the transition arrangements for accreditation to V2 well in advance of implementation. There will also be flexible transition arrangements for the first round of health service organisations to be accredited to V2 Standards. These dates will be updated on the ACSQHC website as they become available.
